Something Strange Lies Beneath This Boulder (Season 13) | The Curse of Oak Island
Something Strange Lies Beneath This Boulder (Season 13) | The Curse of Oak Island

Morning, guys.
>> Hey, >> how are you?
>> As Rick Lagginina and members of the team begin a new day of investigation on Oak Island, >> they have gathered in the war room regarding a recent and potentially game-changing discovery.
>> I think it’s an understatement to say that we’re all extremely interested in what the Laid feature might represent.
Right now, none of us can say definitively what this is. And thus my thought is that it absolutely was built by the hand of man. There is a huge human interface factor here. There’s it’s unquestionable.
>> It definitely been altered by humans and not by any humans that we’re aware of.
>> I agree.
>> So this is what I wanted to show you.
Two weeks ago, Lear Nan noticed a massive boulder on Lot 8 near several partially buried rocks that looked like someone may have set them in place.
As the team dug, they uncovered more buried rocks in front of the boulder.
>> I find that strange.
>> But then Rick noticed it was being held in place by a series of evenly spaced stones.
>> Whoa, you’re going deep.
>> Yeah, you got a big boy down there.
Fiona Steel then began to remove disturbed soil, exposing a tight but open void beneath it.
>> There’s definitely a void that I’m following. The team inserted a snake camera under the boulder, but were unable to tell if something was hidden below.
>> What are the chances that we we lift this boulder and move it?
>> I think it’s worth doing if we can. The question is if we can.
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, I’m on the fence with that one. I’m I’m just worried because if this is a really special special place or it ends up being a really special find, we just have to watch the integrity of it all.
>> What kind of special site would we be talking about potentially?
>> We are searching for treasure on an island famous for treasure. How about some treasure underneath?
>> I agree. I agree.
>> The Ly Boulder feature is one of the most perplexing archaeological sites I’ve worked on. We have to take our time. And we have to do things correctly before we can get down there and see exactly what’s under it. This boulder is so unusual that I have no expectations about what’s under there. I am prepared for nothing and I’m prepared for something spectacular.
My takeaway here is we need to see what’s under that rock one way or another. I’d be a proponent of lifting it if we can think of a way to do it. We didn’t come out here to find the most interesting site on the island and then not investigate it. And so if we can’t think of a way to get the material out from under it that gives us all the information of raising it, then I think we need to raise it. But I’m totally fine and I completely understand wanting to try every alternative first because you don’t want to destroy something that’s potentially very significant.
>> Correct.
>> Yeah, >> I think we can get underneath it without lifting this boulder. I mean, I’ve been working down low. I can see where the rocks are. I can see where the the soil is settled in front. I know we have to be safe about it. I was >> going to say you’re not going onto the boulder >> right now. Is there a part of me that says, “Come on, let’s just go lift it and let’s all grab shovels and dig it up.” 100%. Of course, we want answers.
Of course, we want to find something under probably one of the most singularly unique finds on the island to date, >> right? We don’t want a Oh, if only we hadn’t done that moment. At least not yet.
>> Right. We have to do it safely.
>> 100%.
>> I think I understand where my brother’s coming from. I look at it and I say, “This rock is very important. We need to see what’s under it.” And I don’t want to wait to do that. I want to lift this rock tomorrow. Rick looks at it and says, “This rock is very important.” Same conclusion, but it’s so important.
I want to be careful about moving it.
It’s just a difference of approach, but it stems from the same realization. This is an important feature. I’d say likely there’s something interesting under that rock. Perhaps even treasure.
So, we can move forward to try to further understand what this discovery represents.
>> Perfect.
>> We’ve got a good plan. I think we’re on the right track.
>> Yeah. Okay. So, to that end, I think we’ve all got work to do. So, let’s go try to find something else mysterious about this place.
>> Okay.
>> All right. Cool.
>> All right.
>> See you, Craig. See you, Jack.
>> Hey, guys. Hey.
>> Hi. How are you?
>> Might look a little different now.
>> A little.
>> You can kind of peek in there.
>> Rick and members of the team arrive on lot 8 where more soil has been removed from beneath the massive boulder feature.
>> Any finds yet?
>> No, we haven’t yet, but we are screening all of the soil that’s coming out of here. When you see the rock pinned like this, it’s looking at this point like somebody has excavated out an area of this to get underneath the boulder.
>> When’s the last time you put the camera down?
>> Not since we’ve moved those rocks.
>> We really only just got to the point that we’ve exposed that underbelly of the large boulder.
We have all these stones around that really are tightly placed and there’s a bit of a pathway clearance underneath it right now. So, we’ve had to just scoop out a lot of dirt first, >> but I’d love to see what that camera can show us.
>> We get the camera operator right there.
>> Okay, >> Peter, how about at it?
>> Let’s do it.
>> Archaeology is a slowpaced science. It’s just the nature of the work.
>> Stay focused, Pete.
>> Okay, >> look, at this point, I want to dig it up. I want answers. But I think everyone that is currently endeavoring to uncover what this boulder might represent is recommending that very thing. Let’s do this slow. Let’s do it right. Let’s make certain that we don’t make mistakes.
>> I’ll show you. There’s a really good spot.
>> All right.
>> Okay. Now I’m in in underneath.
>> Okay. See what we can find.
You see anything there? Oh, >> okay. Let me see if I can go farther.
All right.
>> What do you see, Peter?
>> There’s definitely room. How deep do you think we’re in?
>> Probably in about a couple of feet.
>> Want me to try and go down a little further?
>> Absolutely.
>> Stop. Stop. Go ahead. But slow slowly.
What’s that bright blue thing?
Oh, go back a little bit.
No, go forward. Just slow, slow, slow.
Wait. You see that?
Pull forward a little bit. Just a touch >> there.
>> Whatever that is.
>> I have no idea. Doesn’t look like a rock.
>> But if you go forward into it, it feels like a rock.
>> I did, but I passed.
>> Well, come take a look at this.
>> Am I in the right spot?
>> Mhm. Here. That’s what it is.
>> Doesn’t look like a rock.
>> Go towards it a little bit more.
>> Certainly looks different than everything else.
>> Yes, it does. That’s probably the most interesting thing yet.
>> You want to pull it back just a little bit?
>> Sure.
>> Oh my god. It looks like there’s a pearl.
>> That’s very very circular piece. Like almost too perfect.
>> Yeah.
>> Rick and members of the team believe they see new evidence of possible hidden treasure.
>> It’s a pearl.
>> I see why you were saying that now.
>> I’m not saying it is, but that’s where your mind goes immediately.
>> Yeah. And >> Gary, take a look.
>> Of course, you don’t have scale.
>> Yep.
>> But you have the big rock.
>> Oh, you’re thinking >> pirates and pearls. It >> does look like a pearl.
>> Yeah, it does look like a pearl. Yeah, >> it’s hard to believe that it’s a stone.
It’s perfect. It’s almost luminescent.
>> Okay, so now I’m going to go back and in again slowly.
>> Mhm.
But I can’t quite tell where it’s going to go.
>> Okay.
>> So, stop.
>> Yep.
>> Just black.
>> Yeah, just black.
>> Okay.
>> It might be covered.
>> Yeah. Okay.
>> We couldn’t maneuver the camera any closer. But now we have a potential target for further investigation. That makes me more excited. And I wonder what else might be down there.
>> There’s nothing as of yet says that we should cease activities here. And if anything, it says speaks eloquently to we’ve got to continue, >> right?
>> Yeah.
>> It’s a bloody mystery. That is for sure.
>> What about a shop back?
>> I was thinking exactly that. I think it’d be a great idea.
>> Yep. Yep. I think vacuuming that out would be a great next step.
>> Yeah.
>> One, you would collect whatever might be there, and two, it will open that up further so you can get the camera down.
>> Yep. Mhm.
>> I agree.
>> And metal detecting and hopefully pinpulling. And if I can get my arm in there and we can hit some metal, we’re in business.
>> Mhm.
>> Yeah.
>> We shall leave no stone unturned that’s not supposed to turn.
>> Yeah.
>> There is a reason here that people went to some effort to create a lot of feature. And the only reason I can think of is that human beings wanted to put something under this stone.
