WORKER: We’re getting that the road was built on. Every scoop, we’re going back another hundred years in time.
MARTY: Yeah, you’re in the peat now.
SPEAKER 1: Yeah, now we’re into the same stuff they built the road on. What are you hoping to find, in terms of trying to figure out what has gone on here? I mean, really what we’re looking for is an artifact.
RICK: Yeah.
WORKER: And finding coal was a big deal. It gives us an indication of time and purpose.
RICK: Yeah.
WORKER: That’s what I’m looking for. Oh.

[Music playing]

WORKER: What I would do is, instead of digging it, have Gary detect this layer and see if he sees anything down. That peat layer is contemporaneous with the road. So if there’s anything, it’s right in here, to me.
MARTY: Well, let’s haul Gary over?
RICK: Yup. Gary.
GARY: Yep?
RICK: Maybe we should detect this whole surface.
GARY: I agree with that. I’m coming over.

[Music playing]

WORKER: The underwater road has age on it, and it also has about 20 inches of sediment on top of it. So that speaks to it being a little older. This is really exciting. And as usual, you go in there thinking you’ve kind of got it figured out, and you find something that is completely new to everybody. Woo. Very squidgy down here. Not hardly any metal. I’ll try over here.
RICK: Yeah, look at that. Right here. Check that out. Top of a keg.
WORKER: Wow, so that’s a keg? Lid to a keg?
RICK: Yeah.
WORKER: How far down?
RICK: Right there.
WORKER: Holy crow. That’s very important. The lower one is the important, because it’s gonna frost heave and everything. That’s right at the cultural level, right? Like right up there. Pretty much, you got this. Look at the amount of mud we have over this.
GARY: It weren’t just gunpowder they put in kegs, it was all treasure coins, as well.

NARRATOR: Could this piece of a keg barrel be more evidence that the stone pathway was once used to haul heavy cargo, or as Gary Drayton is suggesting, treasure onto Oak Island? And if so, could it be connected to the piece of the keg barrel recovered from the Money Pit in 1861?

WORKER: Right here. Yeah there’s–
RICK: Another piece.
WORKER: Is this– do these go together?
RICK: This looks too rounded.
WORKER: Yeah, they’re different. Different radiuses. This is very important, because this is down at the bottom of this mud layer. I think as we move more towards that road, we’re going to find more and more stuff. And I’m hoping we come up out some more coal.
RICK: Yeah. Well, we should get some answers from these two pieces.
RICK (VOICEOVER): I think there’s some information to be gleaned from them. Might they indicate a certain type of tool, i.e. a certain type of cultural influence? I think the thing to do at this point is not to speculate about the why they’re there, or how they came to be there. I very much look forward to whatever chemical analysis could be done. It’s all about the application of science. We should get some answers from these two pieces.

RICK: Should we bag this? Because what if there is a chemical trace here?
WORKER: Yeah.
RICK: Because it’s not– look at how it’s distinctly different. Right?
WORKER: Yeah, why don’t we do that?
WORKER: I’ll get a bag. I mean, this little piece could tell us some things.
CHARLES: Hopefully, it tells a story.
RICK: Hopefully, there’s more in there that’ll tell a better story.
CHARLES: A better story, and quicker.
RICK: [laughs]

[Music playing]

RICK: What do you think? What is that?
RICK: That’s the proper question to ask. What is that? That is not something that should be in a swamp.

NARRATOR: As another exciting morning begins on Oak Island for brothers Rick and Marty Lagina and their partners—
TOM: That is absolutely amazing to see in a place like this. You would never think this would be here. I mean, it’s just awesome.

NARRATOR: —they continue to uncover two of the most incredible discoveries ever made in the 225-year search for a legendary treasure. Massive stone pathways that have been unearthed in the southeast corner of the triangle-shaped swamp, one of which may be leading directly toward the original money pit treasure shaft.

To ensure that the continued investigation of the swamp is conducted as completely and as carefully as possible, they’ve enlisted the help of archaeologist, Dr. Aaron Taylor.
RICK: Tom has some questions for you. And he’d probably like to hear your opinion to date as to what you think this might be.
AARON: Sure. If I had to give you my opinion on what it is right now, I’d say it’s a road leading up to the uplands. And then we have sort of a rubbly pathway all the way down to here.
RICK: Yeah.
AARON: Possibly, they had built a little harbor somewhere to unload things. And it was a road that would have taken a lot of work to build.
TOM: This is an incredible discovery. I’ve never seen anything like it.
RICK: Yeah. Question is, what’s keeping the stone up. And we’re finding pieces of wood, so we’re thinking possibly some cribbing underneath.
AARON: Yeah.
RICK: So that’s what we got right now.
RICK: What’s that right there?

[Music playing]

RICK: There’s no wood or anything. Aaron, you thought there might be some wood here, right? Some timbers?
AARON: Yeah.
RICK: OK. There’s no– Or some sort of cribbing? There’s another layer of stone underneath this one, though. Right here. It’s really–
AARON: Careful.
RICK: It’s really firm right here. Feel how firm that is.
AARON: Yeah, and then–
RICK: Here’s a stone here. Then you’ve got that real thick whatever it is.
SCOTT: Cut stake.
AARON: And that’s very interesting. Yeah, there is some sort of cribbing or support.

NARRATOR: Another layer of stones and wood cribbing? Has Rick discovered another feature in the construction of this stone road in the swamp? Or could it be another structure below it? If so, just what is it? And why was it built?

[Narrator] Could the road be leading to the original Money Pit shaft? Or possibly toward the stone tunnel the team previously found connecting the Garden Shaft and the Baby Blob area?

[Rick] This thing has just been like this. So we found something that may or may not be part of the stone road. It’s definitely a structure. And there’s some thought that maybe it transitioned into the uplands as a different sort of road. What that might mean is that we might not see that traditional paved appearance.

[Billy] I want to bring in that 8-tonner now.

[Rick] All right. Let’s take a look and see what we’ve got.

[Music playing]

[Billy] This could be important. This is a structure, obviously. The point is: how far it goes. [To Gary] Let’s go check it out.

[Gary] Yeah. Okay. Let’s check it out. Nice big rocks. What’s that?

[Rick] Looks like a wood piece.

[Gary] Oh yeah, look at that. That is very cool. What the heck is that?

[Rick] Looks like some sort of crafted piece.

[Gary] Oh yeah. That is crafted. It’s symmetrical. Yeah, this is not just a random piece of driftwood or anything. This looks like it was intentionally shaped.

[Rick] Maybe it was used as some sort of handle or part of a support?

[Billy] Let’s get this one bagged. Could be part of some rigging or tool. Could tell us something.

[Music playing]

[Narrator] A crafted piece of wood discovered near the newly exposed stone feature in the swamp. Could this support the theory that the swamp was a place of industry, where tools and structures were used to unload cargo from ships?

[Rick] Look how regular these rocks are. They’re spaced like they were laid with intent.

[Gary] This could be the edge of another road or slipway. Look, you can almost draw a line straight down from one rock to the next.

[Billy] That’s what I was thinking. Might be retaining stones for the structure.

[Rick] Well, if it is, we might be looking at the edge of a massive engineered platform here. Possibly where they offloaded things.

[Music playing]

[Narrator] If the team has found another extension of the stone road, and possibly the original edge of a dock or loading platform, what more might be found buried below?

[Marty] We keep digging, we keep finding. That’s the pattern. Let’s keep going.

[Gary] Yeah, let’s stay at it. One of these scoops is going to tell us everything.

[Music continues]
