Below Deck Down Under S4E9: Ellie Melts Down Mid-Charter — Captain Jason Lays Down the Law | AD

Well, Ellie then goes to talk to Jason and he talks about, you know, setting clear boundaries and he tells her, you know, you went too far with this and she agreed with him.
How do you think things are going to go now? Because I feel this was something that needed to happen and now they’re going to be totally fine. They’re going to get on like a wildfire. But how do you how do you think >> I think it’s going to work out for several reasons. one, she doesn’t want to be fired. She wants to be on this show. She was so excited to come back.
And also, we know from things she’s said online that she ends up going to culinary school after this. And she credits Chef Ben for that.
[music] Hi, welcome to Above Deck, a blow deck breakdown podcast. I’m Sarah Goldman, a photographer and former marine biologist living in Charleston, South Carolina.
With me is my college roommate and co-host, Kelly.
Hi, I’m Kelly Busby, an executive assistant and former radio host coming to you from my home studio in Columbus, Ohio. Together, we hosted the Socks with Sandals radio show on WFAL in Bowling Green, Ohio. and we are back again this week to discuss Below Deck and our love of all things Bravo.
Today we’ll be discussing Below Deck: Down Under season 4, episode 9, Till Chaos Do Us Part. Here’s your recap. As galley tensions boil over and guest complaints rattle Chef Ben’s confidence, Captain Jason demands professionalism when Chef Ben and Ellie clash through a tense dinner service. Mounting interior mistakes force Daisy to draw a hard line with her team. Captain Jason calls Chef Ben and Ellie to the bridge for a final reckoning. Kelly, >> how many shackles?
>> I gave it eight. It was It’s pretty good.
>> Yeah, it was.
>> Yeah. Ellie has reached her breaking point and she storms off to talk to Captain Jason about Ben and she’s rushing right through the guest areas right past the guests and says something cute like >> you know um I don’t have time for this not right now. I mean the guest said something cute to her and then she rattles that back to them. Girl, you are not helping yourself.
>> I did not even hear that. That’s wild.
>> Yeah. No bueno. So, she talks to Jason on the sund deck. This is so inappropriate. Both the timing and how she’s talking to Jason, it just comes off as like complaining and like very tattletail situation.
I was waiting for her to stomp her feet and say, “But Captain.” >> Um, okay. So, Captain Dreamboat is getting so much practice for when his daughter comes up to him with a mood.
Like, he’s going to be so good to go.
He’s gonna nail those situations. It’s gonna be great >> for sure. Um, where are you on this situation in general?
>> I feel like I’m watching a tennis match, you know, back and forth. I can see where she’s coming from, but this is >> brand new information to Ben, right? He has no idea that this is irritating to her. So, >> this is the first time he is hearing, “Don’t call me pet names.” and she’s blowing up at him. So, rightfully so, he should be rattled.
>> It’s been marinating in her brain for days and days. And you know, he’s not going to pick up on the context clues.
It’s not his job. It >> He’s your manager. He’s busy.
>> He’s focused on the food and the preference, >> right? I am so sad that it got to this level of anger and frustration.
>> Yeah. Well, it’s very tense energy in the galley after this. And Jason is keeping an eye out.
>> Yeah. Now he feels like he has to babysit the galley for multiple reasons.
For crew safety, for food safety, to make sure meals are getting out.
>> Mhm.
>> And Daisy is even thrown by the directness of Ellie.
>> Yeah.
>> But I wonder how many viewers were thrown by her directness. I think everyone’s been waiting for her to freak out about something. So, >> I’m the second steal.
>> That’s right. It’s eerily quiet in there, but the dishes look amazing.
>> Yeah.
>> And the primary has a special turndown request. Um, why do I think Mike is going to screw this up?
Because Mike, [laughter] you know, the champagne and wine, whatever, doesn’t get to the room before the primaries because Mike is in route.
[laughter] Why can’t he finish his task and then get his drink of water because that’s what he was doing. He was thirsty and he said he >> I is it that hard?
>> Apparently, I’m confused. Sarah, >> after cleanup, Ben has a chat with Ellie.
>> I really like the way that Ben explains himself and I think he apologized. I think that was >> But then I really, really, really like that he turned it around and said, “How do you feel your reaction was?” I thought that was a very good question.
>> Yeah.
>> And valid to ask.
>> Well, it doesn’t go well.
>> No, [laughter] it doesn’t.
Daisy ends up inter intervening and telling Ellie like, “Just go to bed.
Like, get out of here.
>> Go to sleep.” Uh, so Mike is like witnessing everything and goes and gets Daisy because he knows things are just going to get horrible in the galley.
>> Yeah.
>> And yeah, she sends her to bed.
>> Okay. So, Ben admits that she rattles him and he doesn’t seem like someone that’s super easily rattled. So, this was kind of like, oh, wow. Okay.
>> He’s unnerved. In their cabins, Ben talks to Joahow and Daisy talks to Ellie about the situation.
>> So, Joelle tells Ben, “Hey, man, you call me baby.” >> So, you know, he knows he’s not the only one he’s giving or sharing pet names with.
>> Yeah.
>> Ben then Ben then texts Captain Dreamboat to let him know like, “This is what’s coming in the morning. This is what’s going on.
That’s fabulous.
>> Yeah. I guess we kind of already talked about this, but where are you with the whole like terms of endearment thing?
>> Personally, I would rather not be called names like what he’s calling Ellie by someone I work with. I just it would be weird. I have some friends that I have pet names for, like you’re ever forget that. And you just roll with it and it’s fine. Um, I I usually don’t call people of the opposite sex names like what Ben is calling others, though.
I might start calling people Boo Boo because it’s just kind of funny. What about you?
>> Okay, but let’s say you were working with Chef Ben. Would you want him to call you these names or No, because I would. [laughter] >> I think it’s adorable.
>> I mean, it would be fine. I’m sure it would get to a point where it’s like, “All right, man. Come on.” Like, >> you knock it down a notch. But, >> I don’t know. I guess it just would be this situation.
>> Yeah. Interesting. Okay.
>> I will call you Boo Boo.
>> I love it. Okay. Boo Boo. The next step.
>> Hold on just a second.
>> Boooo. Okay.
>> So, we have a new neighbor.
>> He’s young or >> the clow pics >> and he has a new car. It’s some sort of American fast car like Camaro or something. But when it starts, you can hear it and it rumbles the house.
>> Oh, I have one of those, too.
>> Your Prius? [laughter] >> No, I have a neighbor like that.
>> Oh, you have a neighbor like that? The neighbor has a midlife crisis. And >> Oh, yeah. See, this kid’s too young to be having that. I just think he came into money because now he owns his own home.
>> Mhm.
>> And he’s he’s single from what I could tell anyway cuz I’ve been home so much since he moved in. So, I can tell all these things. [laughter] Anyway, just shook the house. Anyway, go ahead.
Sorry.
>> Okay. The next day, Daisy and Jason talk about last night’s situation, and Jason is made aware that she stormed out there like in front of guests.
>> The look of horror on Jason’s face.
>> Yeah.
>> Really bad.
>> No good. So Jason tells Ben they just need to go hard the next 48 hours and then like they’ll figure it out post Charter what’s going to happen.
>> I mean what else are they going to do though?
>> No, the show must go on. Well, >> the breakfast eggs are quite watery. I recall from a previous season that Ben hates making breakfast and I’m wondering does anybody else remember this? I’m like kind of remembering this.
>> That sounds familiar. I don’t take him as an early bird kind of guy.
>> Yeah. I don’t know.
So, I think, you know, I think it’s all going to work out.
>> So, but it certainly was dramatic.
>> It’s a lot. Okay, we have a beach set up for the guests and while everyone else is preparing for the vow renewal that evening. So, >> what was that weird little island that the beach setup was on? It looked like maybe Tom Hanks had been living there with Wilson for four years.
Definitely Castaway vibes.
>> Yeah.
>> Okay, back to the boat. Ellie puts the wedding cake together and it’s >> a little itty bitty topper.
>> I know. With a little like spatula. So cute. Um Mike and Jenna with that damn balloon arch. That was That was kind of a disaster.
>> So why is Mike always trying to wind her up?
>> Why? He winds up everybody.
>> I know. He’s like a little annoying brother.
>> Yeah.
>> And you just want to turn and look at him and go, “Focus, Mike. focus.
>> At the same time, he’s he makes for um good TV.
>> Oh, for sure.
>> Yeah.
>> So, Jenna also is Eddie’s out there helping and tells Eddie, “This is going to be our wedding someday, Eddie.” I’m like, “What?
>> What is happening?” >> Mixed messages, >> right?
>> So, Clay and Mark get renewed.
>> Okay, Captain Jason did a very nice job with their vows. He can use them again.
>> [laughter] >> Wink wink.
>> Are you gonna have him officiate your own wedding to him?
>> No, but he can say them to me.
>> Yeah, there you go. Okay.
>> Yeah.
>> So, Jason joins them for dinner that night. The cake is gorgeous. Ellie did such a good job. And it’s a pineapple like pound cake. That sounds so good.
>> Yes.
>> And Ellie and Ben get through the day.
They worked well together. And I even caught him calling her Ellie multiple times.
>> He was trying. She was trying. Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Um, so let’s see if the eggs are better today.
>> Here’s the thing. If you didn’t like his eggs yesterday, why would you order them again?
>> Could I get a bagel and cream cheese?
Yeah. Can I set the pancake? I don’t know. Something different.
>> Yeah. Daisy finds a cleaning rag left in the nightstand drawer and she’s she’s kind of had it with her stews like rushing through and like not doing certain things.
>> Why? Why?
>> So, >> what’s happening?
>> Back to the dock. The guest depart. And I thought Clay’s goodbye was very, very sweet. And I love how he said, you know, they both come from humble beginnings and they’re very appreciative of like the staff and like where they are in this situation. I started to tear up when they were leaving. They just seemed like genuinely kind people >> and to the show producers and editors to turn a 4-day charter into probably a combined 45 minutes of TV >> between the two episodes. We missed out on a bunch. I feel like they should get a side episode or a bonus episode or something.
>> Yeah. Something. Yeah.
>> Okay. Well, Ellie is called to the bridge and Ben is called to the bridge.
And Captain Jason pretty much just instructs them to have a chat up there privately, just the two of them. And if they can’t work it out, changes will be made. Kelly, >> to be continued.
>> To be continued for sure.
>> Yeah. Well, let’s take a break and when we come back, we’ll have hot tub combo.
Have you tried stream to sea shampoo bars yet?
>> I sure have.
>> It’s time to [laughter] >> Well, it’s time to ditch the plastic, not the performance. Stream to sea shampoo bars are packed with clean, ocean safer ingredients that deliver salon quality results. Stream to sea shampoo bars come in three formulations.

Okay, watch what happens live. Alisia was on last week and she looked stunning. Mhm.
>> Andy asked her about her panty about not her panty lighter, the panty lighter situation and Alisia said she thinks they do that they did that to f with us. So, do you think she meant a previous charter guess? Do you think a current charter guess or my question my addition to this do you think it was production?
[laughter] That would be pretty wild if production did that. I think it had to be probably either the current or the previous charter guess. So >> that’s true.
>> Anyway, it’s very funny. I’m grateful it was a new one and not anything.
>> I know. Yeah. Someone was like, “Daisy should have worn gloves.” I’m like, I’m quite sure somebody just like slapped that up there. Yeah.
>> Unused.
>> Okay. So, >> here’s a surprise for Oh, wait. Oh, yeah. This is you.
>> Okay. Uh, no surprise though. Alicia is not with her boyfriend anymore.
>> Oh, no.
>> Yeah. Surprise. Uh Alicia is okay with pet names. She calls people darling, but then again, she’s not their boss, and darling is kind of sweet. So, yeah, >> I don’t know. Uh she deleted some of the texts before she handed her phone to Jenna. [laughter] >> Oh, no.
>> Interesting.
>> Oh, now I I need to know. We need that.
>> Um Andy asked Alicia if he could see a picture of her boyfriend at the commercial break. Um, >> does she have a new boyfriend or is this >> No, the old one.
>> Okay.
>> He wanted to know like what’s the fuss with this guy? Like he wanted to see.
>> So that was kind of funny.
>> Um, it just shows that he’s not watching the episodes quite a few times.
>> Yeah. [laughter and gasps] >> Alisia [snorts] blamed Mike uh going to bed early for the mess that they left that one night. She stayed up until 3:00 a.m. But what did she do during that time?
>> Was that ever addressed?
>> No. Or is that your question?
>> That’s my question for sure. Like what was she doing that whole time if she was up till 3:00 a.m.? But she seems like I don’t know. She has ADHD. She like has trouble staying on task for sure. As we we learned, >> we are birds of a feather.
>> Yeah. Okay. So, the Blow Deck Down Under after show. This was a good one. This was the after show for episode 8. Mike said the interior crew cut lots of corners all the time. Whether it was like not checking a cupboard in the guest cabin or like not refilling the soap if they thought there was enough.
So >> toilet paper.
>> Yeah. Toilet. Come on. This is like >> that’s something everybody’s going to be using.
>> Yes. [laughter] Okay. So there was lots of discussion about the whole pet name issue and Ben understood where Ellie was coming from and he agreed with her that the pet names were too much. So that was that was big.
>> Okay. Ben said he was grateful to Alisia that she said something to Mike about the whole omelette request.
>> Yeah. [laughter] >> Um Jason said, now I thought this was very insightful. Jason said that deck hands, you know, they work on the boat and they get used to the stews like doing stuff for them like they’re doing their laundry and he’s just um that’s why he makes it a point to do his own laundry like takes the trash out etc.
because he’s trying to set a good example for the deck hands. He doesn’t want people taking his underoos too.
>> That too. [laughter] They might be like selling them or something.
>> That’s right. [laughter] >> Sorry.
A dare from below deck. Uh she was a she was a deck hand.
>> I think she was a deck hand, right?
>> Yeah.
>> Um she will be on Vanderpump Villa season 3 that premieres on April 16th on Hulu. It’s just a couple weeks away.
That’s exciting. Good for her. I know.
I’m excited for her.
>> She had a glam up for sure.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely.
>> Or a glow up. Glow up. Is that what they >> Glow up?
>> Yeah, maybe a glow up.
>> Yeah, she’s great, girl.
>> Okay, so it’s been a while since we asked for these. Please rate and review us in your favorite podcast app if you haven’t done so already. And if you send us a screenshot by DM or email, I will personally mail you an above deck sticker and I will mail it anywhere in the world. So, there’s that. Where’s the farthest place you’ve mailed something to? One of our stickers.
>> Australia. Probably Australia. I don’t know if I’ve done New Zealand.
>> Um, lots of them to Europe and the United States and Canada. So, >> that’s so cool.
>> Yeah. So fun.
>> Okay, friends. Below Deck Down Under will film in Tahiti next season. They are looking for charter guests for April and May. Uh, casting notice for anyone who can find a great group with the money. Reply to below deck.casting at bmp51casting.com.
So it’s B as in boy as in Mary P as in Paul.
>> Yeah.
>> 51casting.com.
And you have to let us know if you apply.
>> Yes, >> please.
>> So um so here we go. So current dates available are May 18th through the 20th and May 21st through the 23rd.
>> Do we go for my birthday? I’ll be in Europe. Oh man. Well, you’re halfway to Tahiti.
>> I know. I’m halfway.
[laughter] >> Well, I think this is interesting because this is kind of like this is some So, hey, I’m currently working on finding a great groups of eight people for the next season of Below Deck Down Under with Captain Jason. The location will be Tahiti and charter dates are in April and May. So, the trip is discounted to $70,000 per group. Normally, this trip would cost over $200,000. So, for $70,000, the group gets transport transportation service once you arrive in Tahiti. Two nights of a hotel, two nights, 3 days on a private yacht, full staffed 24-hour service, private shift, all your food and alcohol on the yacht, all the water toys, and the 20% or $20,000 standard crew tip is included in that price.
Okay, let’s do the math. Hold on.
Bringing up my calculator,000.
>> Okay.
>> Seven, two, three divided by eight.
>> It’s $8,700.
>> That’s a plus you have to fly to Tahiti.
Crazy expensive. It would be a little I mean that’s a lot of money, but it would be a little easier if it were like the Caribbean or something.
>> Yeah.
>> To get there. How interesting that OG is going to be in like this season coming up we’ll be in Thailand.
>> Thailand. And then we’re going to be in Tahiti. It’s going to be cool.
>> We’re doing some other hemisphere kind of stuff. I like it.
>> That’s going to be incredible.
>> Interesting. Well, let us know if you guys sign up. We’d love to know.
>> Or if you need a seventh and eighth person, like we’d love to go along. We just can’t afford it. So, you’d have to cover it for us. I might be willing to do part of it.
[laughter] >> Like >> I’m trying to think how much I’d be willing to pay.
>> An eighth of it. An eighth. [laughter] >> Yeah.
>> Okay. Well, Captain Jason was on Kelly Clarkson’s show last week, although it was recorded quite a while ago. And he talked about his professional rugby days. They even showed a picture of him.
>> Did we know this? Uh, I think he’s mentioned it before. I think he played rugby and then maybe also like another sport. I don’t know if it was >> Captain Jason, >> I mean soccer, football.
>> Yeah, >> I’m not sure. Um, so besides Below Deck Down Under and how he became a captain, he talked about Classroom of Hope, which is the nonprofit he works with in Indonesia. And he also talked about his new YouTube travel series, Currents of Change, which I can never remember if we’ve talked about that or not, but I’m going to put a link to the second episode in our show notes. It’s really good.
>> It’s so good. He sent us a He sent us one >> not too long ago and it was it was neat to watch. So, >> yeah. Very cool. I love that he’s doing that and I hope we get a chance to talk to him so we can >> I want to hear more about it for sure.
the um there were some uh videos of or maybe it was a real or something on Kelly Clarkson’s Instagram page where he’s walking through and she’s like taking video. Oh, we’ll add it in post and then the waves come up and >> Yeah. And the dolphin.
>> He was loving it. I love that.
>> He looks so good on the show, too. Like I think he’s usually dressed by Kenneth Cole >> and he just he looked super sharp. Good colors on him. He looked great.
It’s time for our segment, Join Me in the Wheelhouse, where we decide who needs to see Captain Dreamboat for a stern talking to. Kelly, who do you call to the wheelhouse this week?
>> We’re calling Mike. Mike needs to quit winding up Jenna for the sake of winding >> and should stay focused on the task at hand. Like, he should have had the champagne special request setup done well before they left the table.
>> And if he would focus on his job as much as he does his hair, >> [laughter] >> you’d be good to go.
>> Absolutely.
>> So, come on, Mike.
